Boat Captain

Purpose

The primary responsibility is the safe operation, maintenance and navigation of a 41’ Hatteras vintage powerboat from 1960. The captain will exhibit expert seamanship, maintaining compliance with local, state, and federal regulations that apply to small passenger boats, while providing a professional, friendly, and engaging experience for both clients and employees.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Captain Services
• The safe navigation and operation of the boat
• Being an ambassador for the boat, hosting and entertaining employees and guests as required (with an owner and/or business representative also hosting).
• Maintain clean boat (interior and exterior).
• Maintain (create) binder/documentation related to all aspects of operations (who to call, maintenance, tips and tricks, guest books, operation of equipment, local waterway notes for operators, waivers for guests, etc.)

Boat Management:
• Establish. maintain and document protocols for Forward Space Staff and Guests: Waivers, use, safety.
• Overseeing the upkeep of the vessel: Document issues needing to be addressed and gain quotes as appropriate plus schedule shipyard for repair times.
• Define any needed safety or provision equipment and obtain it with owner’s budget approval (Furniture, accessories, glassware, equipment, safety)

Qualifications:

• Self-directed; takes initiative; resourceful; good problem-solving ability and follow through.
• Clear and professional communication skills, including verbal, written, and listening skills.
• Experience driving a similar size boat with similar equipment.
• Takes safety seriously.
• Good professional presence, service attitude and impression when hosting guest or working with Forward Space employees.

Additional Requirements:

• Boat captain license appropriate for 41’ powerboat preferred.
• Background check, references and recommendations required.
• Hours: Full time employment. Would like to be able to flex hours to accommodate client entertaining. That means often need lunch, cocktail and dinner hours covered and some weekends.
• Dates would be Mid-June through Mid-September (Potentially extend through early October to get boat put away) 2021.
• Access to use showroom for shower and laundry and Wi-Fi.

Location:
• Milwaukee Wisconsin Harbor District (potential to be asked to bring boat to Chicago for temporary visits).

Job Description:

REMSA Inc. Coastal & Marine Division is seeking skilled and experienced Independent Contracting Boat Operators to conduct surveying operations during dredging and pile driving projects. Since 1999, REMSA, Inc. has been involved in conducting water quality surveys in support of environmental compliance for offshore industrial operations requiring compliance in accordance with environmental regulations and permits.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Boat Operators will operate an assigned survey vessels/boats during dredging and pile driving projects on various waterways along the East Coast in the United States. Operators will be required to perform duties in adverse/inclement weather aboard vessels/boats at sea. Must be able to work independently and follow technical instructions as required.

Job include, but are not limited to the following:

Ensure compliance with the maritime, federal, state and local law, to include other regulations in accordance with the USCG basic water-safety guidelines.
Read weather reports and adjust navigation as appropriate.
Analyze maps and record GPS coordinates of sampling locations.
Understand and comply with standard procedures and guidelines for the operation of a safe and environmentally sound vessels/boats.

Conduct daily inspections of the assigned vessel to ensure seaworthy condition and arrange for maintenance and repair activities to correct any damages as required.
Adhere to the policies and work related specs as required.

Plan and implement daily/weekly maintenance work on the vessel/boat.
Submit prompt written and verbal incident reports to the Company and clients as required.
REQUIREMENTS:

Previous experience operating a survey vessel.
Possess a professional Captain’s License.
U.S. Citizen or have authorization to work in the U.S. without sponsorship or restrictions.
Valid Driver’s License & Clean Driving Record.
Must have the ability to adapt to changing conditions and respond to emergency situations.
Ability to lift 50 pounds, operate in confined spaces, and climb ladders aboard ships and crew boats when required.
Must have a Federal TWIC clearance (the physical card must be on hand prior to accepting work assignments).
Education, Skills and Experience:

Minimum GED or High School diploma W/ experience operating a small vessel during marine construction projects.
