Captains- Full Time and Part Time
We are seeking to hire Full & Part-time USCG licensed captains with a sailing endorsement and experience on the Chesapeake Bay. The ideal candidate must have mechanical & maintenance experience, good communication skills, knowledge of the Chesapeake Bay. You will ensure that all procedures as outlined in the company’s manuals are carried out. This includes, but is not limited to, maintenance and repairs on the vessel. Maintenance on the vessel includes maintaining the appearance of the vessel and regularly scheduled engine maintenance and repairs such as oil changes, filter changes, impeller changes, and belt changes. Other responsibilities include preparing the vessel for the annual Coast Guard inspection, pre-cruise preparation, adherence to cruise scripts, supervision of crew, proper piloting of vessel, and adherence to all Coast Guard rules and regulations. Your work schedule will rotate with other captains. High school diploma or equivalent required is a minimum. Must currently possess a six Pack or Master Captains license with a sailing endorsement and a satisfactory record. Minimum of five (5) years of marine experience preferable to include three (3) years as a USCG licensed captain with an outstanding record on tour or sightseeing boats. Department of Transportation worker’s references, as well as other work related references, will be requested and checked. You will be subjected to drug testing and background check.

Minimum qualifications for the role include:

Current Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC Card)

CPR/First Aid Certified
FCC Marine Radio Operators Permit
Proficient in operation of twin engine vessels
Basic knowledge of marine systems
Essential duties and responsibilities include:
Safe navigation and proper boat handling of vessels up to 100 feet

Overview of Primary Responsibilities:
Responsible for the daily operation of the ferry. This may include, but is not limited to: daily responsibilities for fares/deposits, safety and cleanliness, ensure complaints/injuries and reports are being directed or submitted to the ferry manager, and routinely works in direct contact with the Transportation Coordinator and the ferry manager.
Mandatory Qualifications:
Must have or be able to obtain, a merchant marine credential or appropriate captains license
Must be able to read, write, and speak English as the primary means of work communication
Must possess a high school diploma or it’s equivalent
Mandatory Requirements:
Must be available to work between the hours of 6:00am and 11:00pm, 7 days a week
Hours and shifts will include both weekends and holidays between April and November
This position requires the ability to move quickly between the ramps and the vessel, while twisting, turning, stepping, and in other ways maneuvering around closely parked vehicles, bikes, and pedestrians
Must possess the physical ability to repeatedly reach in and out of pockets and aprons while making change and taking tickets from passengers
The largest portion of shift will be standing and traversing between the passenger vehicles and the wheelhouse for operation of the vessel
Must be able to clearly see and hear deckhands/passengers as well as boats or obstacles approaching the vessel to avoid accident and injury, which may be during times of light, dark, fog and inclement weather
Environment:
This position is based on a steel vessel, in the straits of Ironton in Lake Charlevoix
exposure to direct sun for several hours of the day, with intermittent access to the wheel house
Duties must be performed in inclement weather at times
