We are looking for a Full-Time Captain for a family owned 52 Grand Banks that is based out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida USA. This is a private vessel that will never be chartered. Currently heading up North at this time from Florida. We reside in New York and will go to the yacht most weekends throughout summer months (Arriving Fridays and departing Monday mornings). Our summer schedule usually includes Newport and Nantucket. We may also include Martha’s Vineyard, Block Island and/or Sag Harbor, and possibly New York City later in the season when the boat heads back south to Florida. The boat heads South in Fall for maintenance and travels in the winters to south Florida, Bahamas and/or Caribbean. Our time on the boat in winter season tend to be approximately 2 trips per month. All usually short trips from 3 to 6 days max. We desire a Captain that is interested in maintaining and operating a personal yacht of this size. When we need a stew for our trips we would expect the captain to locate qualified personnel and for maintenance and any repairs. We would like a Captain to have experience maintaining and troubleshooting to keep the yacht in excellent condition. We are looking for someone who is honest, hard working, and easy to get along with. We expect a Captain to have our best interest in mind by negotiating with vendors to help keep expenses down. Salary is $62,400 per year plus an annual bonus of $3,000-6,000 per year. We will provide uniforms and 4 weeks paid vacation per year.

This is a family boat. We grew up boating and love being on the water. We would hire a stew to help with family trips. Want someone who helps to keep expenses down. Want a captain who will take good care of our boat, is neat and organized. We will spend summers up northeast and winters in the south (Fla, Bahamas and Caribbean). When children are on board we usually bring our Nanny. We will get hotel rooms when necessary for additional crew or guests. We are friendly and enjoy dining out, shopping and relaxing onboard. We cook at times ourselves but appreciate crew that is also handy with preparing snacks, cocktails etc. Cooking is not at all a requirement. We desire a captain with experience traveling to our above destinations and knows these locations for best dockage locations with the best amenities. We want a Captain that will keep dockages costs at a minimum when we are not onboard utilizing a Mooring or on the hook. When we travel to some destinations we prefer to be on the Mooring or hook at times as well.

The Ferry Captain is responsible for the safe transportation of all island visitors to and from Thompson Island on our 65’ passenger ferry. In addition, the Ferry Captain may be responsible for operating a smaller vessel to support the Programs Department in student course evacuations. The Ferry Captain reports to the Director of Operations.

Responsibilities:
•Serves as Master of a 65’ USCG inspected passenger vessel
•Operates a variety of small, uninspected passenger vessels and work boats
•Performs minor maintenance tasks as outlined in our Planned Maintenance Program

DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of Director, Marine Programs, manages and operates large power vessels up to 100 gross tons to support maritime instruction, private charters, and ferrying of passengers. Oversees all deck and mechanical operations while disembarking, underway, and docking. Ensures the safety of students, crew, volunteers, and passengers. Plans and manages all maintenance aboard large vessels owned by the College. Ensures compliance with US Coast Guard (USCG) and other regulations.

Distinguishing Career Features
The Captain is a licensed maritime professional, qualified with a USCG Masters license to operate inspected vessels of at least 100 gross tons. The Captain is responsible for the safety of the students, faculty, crew and other passengers at all times while aboard and underway. The Captain is responsible for crew training and vessel maintenance. The Captain shall assist faculty as needed in implementing on board lesson plans and exercises.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Commands the large vessels owned by the College and Foundation. Supervises crew, faculty, students, and other passengers by applying maritime protocols and assuring safety.
• Maintains an up-to-date vessel daily log and records of maintenance and other operations details as required by the USCG and other agencies. Plans, coordinates and oversees inspections of large vessels on the cycles required by the USCG.
• Ensures current documentation, display, and presentation of all licenses, certificates, and other documentation according to USCG regulations, policies and procedures. Notifies the authorized administrator of pending expirations within 30 days to remain current.
• Prepares and prioritizes projects and schedules for vessel maintenance and refit, recommending major repairs or vessel modifications to accommodate new training and compliance requirements.
• Performs routine maintenance, including, but not limited to electrical, electronic, mechanical, and hydraulic system repairs. Purchases and maintains vessel parts and supplies.
• Assists faculty in design and implementation of onboard learning objectives. While underway, directs students, student interns, volunteers and crew in the performance of shipboard duties.
• Assists in leading Professional Mariner student groups in accomplishing learning objectives while onboard, including the supervision of crew members and student interns.
• Prepares technical memoranda, as requested, on vessel operations and efficiency, budgetary requirements, and recommendations for equipment.
• Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
This is a specialized position that performs the full range of duties to command and navigate ocean vessels for commercial and educational purposes.
The position requires:

Knowledge of:
• Theory and practice of general seamanship and piloting of large vessels including rules of the road, crew management, harbor regulations, first aid methods, and shipboard emergency procedures.
• USCG Navigation Rules and Federal laws governing navigation of power driven vessels in inland and coastal waters, including local navigation aids and hazards, and the execution of the rules for safe navigation and radio communications.
• Working knowledge and skill in using modern navigational instruments and electronic equipment, computer-aided software, and peripherals for navigation and communications.
• General seamanship normally associated with command of a large vessel, including safety procedures, anchoring, navigating, piloting, close quarters maneuvering, crew management, log keeping, shipboard emergency procedures, repair of electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems.
• Large vessels and related equipment, maintenance, operation and overhaul.
• Mechanical and electrical systems, tools and equipment used in the operation and maintenance of power driven vessels, diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical, and auxiliary equipment.
• Vessel’s emergency procedures and crew performance to ensure passenger safety
• Sufficient math skill to read, summarize, and record numbers, coordinates, and measurements used for marine navigation.
• Well-developed communication and writing skill to develop, implement and log crew training drills, and keep and prepare vessel logs, records and reports.
• Well-developed human relations skills to work cooperatively with others to explain creative and technical concepts.

Education and Experience:
• The position requires an Associate’s degree
• Five years of progressive experience piloting a power vessel greater than 60 feet in length in coastal waters, including the Channel Islands.

• Or, any combination of education and experience that would provide the required qualifications for the position.

Licenses and Certificates:
• Requires a valid driver’s license.
• Current Masters License for mechanically propelled vessels up to 100 GRT issued by the USCG
• Valid third class Federal Communications Radio-Telephone Operator’s License
• Radar endorsement.
• Standards of Training and Certification of Watch keeping.
• First Aid, CPR and AED issued by American Red Cross (or equivalent)

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed outdoors in varied environmental settings that will include exposure to wide-ranging sea and weather conditions as part of year-round work performed aboard an ocean-going vessel; may work in very confined or awkward spaces; may be exposed to and/or have skin contact with detergents, abrasives, cleaning solvents and disinfectants.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Successful candidate is required to perform work of an active nature, requiring sufficient physical stamina to carry out duties on an ocean-going vessel under all sea conditions, operate in confined spaces, as well as function in an office setting.
Requires use of well-developed hand eye coordination for precise motions while using small instruments and for observing moving objects and environments.
Requires ambulatory ability to lift medium-to-heavy weight materials, balance on unstable surfaces, and walk and stand for extended periods of time.
Requires hand and arm strength to lift, carry and/or push and pull 50 lbs., with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
Requires visual acuity to observe moving objects, safety issues, vessel traffic, weather, instrument readings in color, and printed materials.
Requires auditory ability to project voice to a small group.
Conditions of Employment
This is a full-time, 12-month, classified management position. The normal hours of work will be 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 P.M., Monday through Friday. However, some flexibility such as evenings and week-ends will be required to meet the needs of the department. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.
