FSU Coastal & Marine Lab (FSUCML) The FSUCML is situated in a pristine site on the northeast Gulf Coast of Florida known as the Big Bend Region. The laboratory is committed to research focused on coastal and marine issues of ecological importance that provides the scientific basis for policy decisions. The research program is interdisciplinary in nature, based on an ecosystem level approach, and thus requires the interactions of scientists from a number of different fields.

Responsibilities

The Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory (FSUCML) (http:///www.marinelab.fsu.edu) seeks a highly motivated and organized individual for a full-time alternate boat captain/first mate position onboard the RV APALACHEE, a 65-ft (80 ton), twin engine research vessel. The position will require precise vessel maneuvering, extensive nighttime work and will involve the deployment of a variety of oceanographic equipment and fishing gears. Other duties include assisting the first captain in vessel maintenance and accommodating research equipment loading, hookup and deployment. Most of the boat operations will take place in coastal and offshore waters from Florida to Louisiana, from shallow water depths to 3000 m. Cruises typically range from one to seven days in length, though longer cruises (with port-days) are possible. The position reports the Marine Operations Manager.

Qualifications

We seek an individual who can work well in a dynamic environment with scientists as well as college students from many different disciplines, including marine biology, fisheries ecology and oceanography. (1) Must have at least a 100-ton captain’s license and meet all US Coast Guard standards for time at sea and drug testing (2) High school diploma/equivalent and at least four years of relevant experience (3) Knowledge of field equipment use and maintenance (4) Proficient in computer applications, including Excel and Word or equivalent software (5) Attention to detail and ability to multi-task (6) Ability to work independently, be a self-starter, and have strong critical thinking and communication skills. *Applicants must submit electronic copies (PDF files preferred) of a Resume and the names and e-mail addresses of three professional references along with the application.*

Description

SUMMARY

To serve as the commander of the vessel to which assigned, in charge of overall safe operations, maintenance, crew accountability and productivity. Able to operate/ navigate Tugs in the River / Inland Marine Fleet efficiently and safely.

Highlighted responsibilities for this position can include, but are not limited to:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

-Understand and comply with standard procedures and guidelines for the operation of a safe and environmentally sound vessel.

-Adhere to and be an advocate and authority regarding protocols that deal with prevention of product/petroleum spills and what to do in case of an actual emergency. Alert the Port Captain or Safety officer in the event of even a very minor spill and participate in any investigation to understand and have input in corrective actions.

-Conduct required safety drills including those for spills, man-overboard, fire and mayday. Document in ship logbook and/or other appropriate log.

-Deal with personal injuries by participating in a root cause investigation with the safety officer and Port Captain. Institute a “best practice” for the particular activity that caused the injury. Be a role model for safe behavior and planning safe activities.

– Conduct inspections of your assigned vessel to ensure seaworthy condition and arrange for maintenance and repair activities to correct any deficiencies as seen by him/herself, the crew or a professional surveyor.

-Hold crew accountable for their adherence to maritime law, the policies of the company and their individual performance.

– Work as directed by the Equipment Manager, Port Engineer and/or Marine Superintendents
– Conduct safety meetings, complete TSA’s and AHA’s accordingly

– Attend project safety and kick-off meetings
– Perform various vessel maneuvers safely.
– Manage all levels of crewmembers aboard the vessel
– Delegate daily tasks, ensure satisfactory and safe completion of each
– On a weekly basis submit accurate payroll hours for crew members
– Train new hires and mentor deckhands

Essential Functions:

Cruise Execution

Rotates as cruise captain on cruises and ensures adherence to procedures detailed in the Product Management Guide. This includes thorough pre-cruise preparation, adherence to cruise scripts, supervision of crew, proper piloting of vessel, adherence to all Coast Guard rules and regulations, and guest satisfaction
Gathers pertinent cruise event details from the other departments to ensure special guest requests are fulfilled thereby ensuring complete guest satisfaction
Conducts pre-cruise meetings and communicates to crew all necessary information regarding the cruise (special needs, boarding procedures, etc.)
Ensures that staff and guests adhere to all safety standards and procedures
Participates in the execution of the Safety Program, including emergency drills
Participates in the proper maintenance of all ships systems and boarding facilities including but not limited to gangways, diesel, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, water (potable, raw, black, and gray), fire suppression, communications, and navigation
Ensures adherence to Coast Guard rules and regulations, and other federal and local rules and regulations
Ensures strict compliance to Emergency Response Plan
Executes other projects as assigned by management

Operations Team Management

Recruits non-exempt operations staff (crew) when necessary to fill vacant positions
Delivers training to new crew
Schedules crew according to staffing matrix
Adheres to Companys performance management guidelines for all discipline and termination situations
Recommends to the Operations Manager the promotion of crew to full-time annual positions
Develops positive working relationships with city department heads and peers
Develops strong teamwork within the staff

Customer Service
Resolves guest problems in conjunction with the on-duty Restaurant Manager utilizing strong customer service skills and exercising effective communication skills in keeping with company objectives and customer retention
Oversees the implementation and execution of safety programs in accordance with Coast Guard regulations and established Company policies

Administration
Completes all shift records: checklist, logbook, payroll, and documentation of safety training
Ensures that accident reports are completed accurately and promptly
Participates in administration of payroll system including scheduling, checking, transmitting and processing
Executes collateral duties as assigned by Operations Manager: uniforms, crew training, safety training, recruiting, scheduling crew and routine vessel maintenance
Schedules crew work periods to achieve maximum payroll efficiency
Attends all scheduled meetings

The successful captain will personally contribute to the unforgettable guest experience, be favorably viewed by supervisors and peers, and be swift and efficient in the execution of their assigned duties. Must currently possess 100 ton license with a satisfactory record
