We are looking for a Full-Time Captain for a family owned 52 Grand Banks that is based out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida USA. We desire a Captain familiar with the Northeastern Seaboard of the United States and the Bahamas.
This is a private vessel that will never be chartered. Currently heading up North at this time from Florida. We reside in New York and will go to the yacht most weekends throughout summer months (Arriving Fridays and departing Monday mornings). Our summer schedule usually includes Newport and Nantucket. We may also include Martha’s Vineyard, Block Island and/or Sag Harbor, and possibly New York City later in the season when the boat heads back south to Florida. The boat heads South in Fall for maintenance and travels in the winters to south Florida, Bahamas and/or Caribbean. Our time on the boat in winter season tend to be approximately 2 trips per month. All usually short trips from 3 days to maybe one week at most during the winter.
We desire a Captain that is interested in maintaining and operating a personal yacht of this size. When we need a stew for our trips we would expect the captain to locate qualified personnel and also for maintenance and any repairs. We would like a Captain to have experience maintaining and troubleshooting to keep the yacht in excellent condition. We are looking for someone who is honest, hard working, and easy to get along with. We expect a Captain to have our best interest in mind by negotiating with vendors to help keep expenses down. Salary is $62,400 per year plus an annual bonus of $3,000-6,000 per year. We will provide uniforms and 4 weeks paid vacation per year.
This is a family boat. We grew up boating and love being on the water. We would hire a stew to help with family trips. Want someone who helps to keep expenses down. Want a captain who will take good care of our boat, is neat and organized. We will spend summers up northeast and winters in the south (Fla, Bahamas and Caribbean). When children are on board we usually bring our Nanny. We will get hotel rooms when necessary for additional crew or guests. We are friendly and enjoy dining out, shopping and relaxing onboard. We cook sometimes but appreciate crew that is also handy with preparing snacks, cocktails etc. Cooking is not at all a requirement. We desire a captain with experience traveling to our above destinations and knows these locations for best dockage with the best amenities. We want a Captain that will keep dockage costs at a minimum when we are not onboard utilizing a Mooring or on the hook. When we travel to some destinations we also enjoy the Mooring or hook at times as well.
Work Experience Requirements
All applicants must have previous experience in working on a Yacht.
Language Requirements
At least basic knowledge of the English language is required.
Certificates and Qualifications
Valid STCW certificates are required from all applicants.

CAPTAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Excellent skills in boat handling
Share the adventure of sailing with our guests from a historic, environmental and geographic point of view
with a sense of humor
Ability to set the proper atmosphere for the safety of the passengers and crew. Acting as a host (on a rotational basis) to our “Boat and Breakfast†guests (extra pay)
Maintenance of our vessels
o Regular engine maintenance>
o Upkeep of brightwork, rigging, plumbing
o Other system maintenance.
o During the off season (November through March), share the responsibility to ready the boat for the following season
o More complex maintenance skills in woodworking, painting, varnishing, etc.
Help with preparation for USCG inspections
In emergency situations, employees may need to change their normal operations and help secure business
property, assets and/or vessel safety
BACKGROUND
The successful candidate will be a friendly and safe professional captain who will have several years of experience:
Working as a captain, aboard a sailing vessel doing similar activities as outlined above
Managing a crew and maintenance workers to get work done timely and on task
Will have the maintenance skills to carry out the tasks described above
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will have a valid USCG License as a Master of Auxiliary Sail Vessels with a minimum of
an Inland rating and 50 Gross Tons, a Marine Radio Operators Permit, a clean USCG record, and have no objections
about being enrolled in a random drug-testing program. The person must also have the following qualifications:
Excellent oral communication skills
Expertise in Maintenance organization and implementation
Be a skillful leader and trainer for crew
Open to new ideas, and a “team-playerâ€
Must look at the responsibility of these boats as if they were their own
COMPENSATION
The full time position would be salaried with a starting salary around $44,000 depending on experience. Gratuities
also add up to additional compensation and averages around $2500. If the captain performed as expected and was
able to take on more responsibility reasonable increases could be expected. Weekly workload ranges from 40-50
hours, and there is a generous PTO policy during the winter months. We also offer health benefits and retirement
plan options.
In addition to the salary mentioned above, we will pay an additional $75 per Boat & Breakfast night duty.
