The Captain shall have the sole responsibility for insuring the safety and security of the vessel, the passengers and the crew at all times. They shall be licensed by the United States Coast Guard to operate the vessel and insure that all rules and regulations are followed as set forth for each vessel they are assigned to operate. The Captain will also assume responsibility for seeing that the vessel and its crew are ready to accept passengers and provide the tour and associated activities in a professional and timely manner.
DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
Ensure passenger safety at all times, provide excellent customer service, Pilot and maintain control of company vessel on assigned route, conduct emergency preparedness drills, participation in required training programs, directing the handling vessel lines and running gear, supervising the loading of equipment and stores, posting a watch, Assuring Vessel security protocols are executed, supervise and perform light janitorial duties, light maintenance, interact with passengers, conduct safety inspections, Manage assigned vessel crew in accordance with Company policy and USCG requirements. Implement company SMS and Security plan for the vessel assigned, light clerical duties including filling reports and logs.
QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
Ability to successfully complete orientation and position specific training, Pass a criminal background check as required, Obtain CPR/First aid certification and obtain a TWIC card as required. The ability to input data using a computer and other traditional means.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Captains frequently spend long hours standing in the pilothouse while piloting a vessel and while boarding/ disembarking passengers. This is often outdoors during all weather conditions in and around the Chicago are waterways. The Captain will frequently get under way on the vessel and will be subject to the effects of the marine environment. The Captain may spend time in cramped conditions below decks while performing his/her duties.
PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Required to stand, sit and kneel for extended periods, Required to carry loads up to 50lbs unassisted, Required to push loads of 100lbs unassisted, Required to work with arms extended upright for extended periods while using tools or devices, Require to work while arms extended outward for extended periods using tools or devices, Required to work in cramped quarters and fit through deck hatches of 20†diameter. Required to conduct tasks while wearing the appropriate PPE.

Master of Towing with Near Coastal & Western Rivers:
The captain is responsible for the following:
Safe and Efficient operation of the tug and its crew;
Safe and efficient transportation and relocation of barges and its cargo;
Supervision of the Mate and Deck Crew.
Keep daily company and Coast Guard reports and/or log books;
Besides the important job of steering the vessel, the Captain also directs the deckhand(s) during towing;
Controls operations with barges;
Safe operation of tug;
Assists with regular daily maintenance, cleaning of equipment, perform maintenance checks on equipment.
Requirements
To perform his job, the Captain must:
Hold a valid USCG Master of Towing with Near Coastal & Western Rivers License;
Be proficient in marine technology as it relates to towing;
Be proficient in the basic operation of the tug and its various components;
Have knowledge in the proper ways to secure lines to barges and cargo;
Be able to communicate via radio, face to face and in writing.
Physical Requirements:
Walk up/down 1-3 flights of stairs to reach the wheelhouse or galley;
Possibly walk in rain, windy and on occasion turbulent waters as he/she moves to or from the wheelhouse;
May climb up 3-4 foot high “step” to get on or off barges;
Sit or stand at the control panel throughout work shift;
Be able to reach 80″ height to operate radio;
Be able to push or pull; at least 80 lbs of force to steer the tug;
Might sit in a cushioned chair or desire to stand.
Be able to speak clearly over the radio to give instructions and directions to the deck crew;
Be able to see and identify red, green, black and white colors;
Be able to hear the radio over the noise of the tug.

Responsibilities/Performance Standards:
Coordinate crew and logistics planning related to area towing operations on a daily basis.
Conduct performance appraisals for area tugboat Masters bi-annually or as needed, specifically including piloting, docking, crew management, vessel management, and crew safety.
Recommend, develop, and implement revisions of the company Safety Management System (SMS) annually.
Investigate crew, vessel, and equipment incidents in conjunction with area port and staff management.
Assist Area Port Engineer Hawaii in coordinating repair and replacement of equipment aboard vessels.
Implement and administer all approved company operational, safety, policy and procedure manuals, and review for revisions on an annual basis or as needed.
Ensure that all area-towing operations are in accordance with applicable federal and state regulations.
Administer the area IBU Labor Agreement and represent the company in the Joint Labor Relations Committee (JLRC).
Direct the area employment, assignment, evaluation, promotion, discipline, and scheduling of vessel personnel. Consult the Area Port Engineer Hawaii in regard to engine room personnel.
Make recommendations to the VP/General Manager for vessel and barge work list and plan construction, repair or modification at the weekly operations meeting.
Responsible for training area Masters in the proper use of vessel emergency retrieval gear, life-saving gear, safety procedures, fire suppression equipment, and medical supplies.
Assist the VP/General Manager in reviewing and establishing rate schedules for tug assists and opportunistic work.

Experience: Experience as a licensed deck officer in the tug and barge industry. Preference given to those with experience as Master, prior management experience, and local knowledge of Hawaiian maritime ports. Must maintain valid MMC with applicable endorsements.
Applicant must be physically fit and able to board barges and tugs at sea and in port in all weather conditions and in all hours. Normal working conditions are Monday through Friday but, candidate will be required to occasionally travel to out ports and training seminars and be able to be on call as required during nights and weekends.

Echo Hill Outdoor School, located on the Chesapeake Bay, operates Skipjack Elsworth, Buyboat Annie D, M/V Spirit and M/V Twilight.
EHOS seeks a full time, salaried Captain/Educator for our Historic Fleet. Our fleet works 10 months of the year as part of an overarching experiential curriculum of varied land and Bay based programs.
A full time Captain at EHOS will teach 3 hour bay ecology classes aboard our two deadrise workboats, and seasonally lead 1 to 5 day overnight trips aboard our Skipjack and Buyboat. Weekly maintenance and semi-annual yard periods are also overseen and completed by the Captains. Additional responsibilities may be required of captains in land based curriculum and residential programs. Staff housing and board is offered.
This position requires a minimum USCG 25 ton Inland Masters (sail endorsement preferred.) Prior experiential education experience is beneficial.
