Qualifications
Required Education:
High School Diploma or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Experience:
One year of post-Master’s license relevant industry experience.
Preferred Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Maritime Transportation, Maritime Administration, Marine Systems Engineering or related field.
Preferred Experience:
Three years post licensure of relevant industry experience.

40%: Operational Leadership
Serves as a Vessel Master and navigates vessels safely and skillfully on inland waters. Serves as a Mate on offshore voyages. Provides operational leadership for their directed area of responsibility and onboard the vessel of which they are the master. Maintains a positive working environment and relationships with other colleagues and units on campus. Responsible for the fiduciary oversight of budgets and operations in their area of responsibility in accordance with published processes, rules, policies and law. Ensures the overall safety of the vessel and all persons onboard. Ensures operational readiness and maintenance of vessels. Ensures crew is properly trained. Responsible for discipline of direct report personnel. Coordinates logistics with all shore side personnel and port officials. Responds to emergencies as directed. Will require the use of a University owned vehicle around the shipyard.
30%: Maintenance
Manages and directs assigned personnel in the operations and maintenance of assigned vessels. Adds items to the Maintenance Data System and assigns maintenance items to yourself and assigned personnel. Maintains a list of daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly preventative maintenance items on each boat and complete them on time. Supervises the completion of maintenance tasks. Submits application for inspection with USCG. Ensures that the vessels meet inspection criteria and perform the inspection with the USCG. Solicits bids from shipyards. Supervises shipyard and inspection activities.
15%: Administration
Schedules and documents emergency drills as required by USCG. Ensures Emergency Procedures, Safety Speech, Captain’s Checklist, Operations Manuals, and Hurricane Plans are reviewed and updated annually. Ensures vessel documentations, in paper and electronic form, are current and correct. Updates charts, and required nautical publications regularly. Completes timely employee evaluations and job qualification requirement documentations. Manages budget for assigned area of responsibility and submit monthly expense reports. Creates syllabus, gather/ create training aids, and report attendance for WAVE LLC classes.
10%: Training
Performs emergency drills as required by USCG. Develops and updates training materials and delivers training to internal and external personnel. Assists with vessel operator training program for TAMUG. Trains personnel on their responsibilities. Assist with the instruction of WAVE LLC classes

DESCRIPTION: The part-time (PT) boat captain prepares and operates The College
(CFK) boats during college sanctioned events. Hours will vary according to need and will be determined on a weekly basis. This position typically maintains a 5 to 15-hour work schedule and reports to the Director of Marine Science and Technology or designee.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
1. Prepares CFK vessels for operation.
2. Maintains strict inventory and control of all equipment on the vessel.
3. Provides a safety briefing to passengers.
4. Refuels the vessel after use.
5. Ensures the college vessel has all necessary and required safety equipment as required by U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) regulations for safe vessel operations.
6. Provides a safety briefing to passengers.
7. Works cooperatively with the Deckhand to decide if the weather is reasonable for the planned dives or excursion.
8. Be familiar with risk management and can implement emergency action plans.
9. Logs incident/accident reports as necessary.
10. Work in a supervisory capacity on an CFK vessel that conducts dive training. 11. Ensures that vessel is operations prior to college use.<
12. Operates and navigates CFK vessel during college sanctioned events.
13. Provides other support services to Division of Marine Science and Technology as needed.
14. Conducts safety drills in accordance with USCG requirements as assigned by the Director of Marine Science and Technology.

POSITION SUMMARY
This position is accountable for supporting field operations at marine project locations for Construction – Atlantic & Caribbean. Incumbents are responsible for the Tugboat and Barge while these vessels are underway going to or returning from a marine project site. Typically, they will work closely with the Project Superintendent, General Foreman, Barge Foreman, Crane Operators, Welders, Laborers, Helpers and other skilled or semi-skilled crafts persons.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES Works as assigned by the General Foreman to ensure the successful completion of on-going or new marine construction projects. Operates the tugboat and barge while these vessels are in transit to and from marine project locations and doing so in a safe and efficient manner.
Demonstrates ability to maneuver, position, turn, slow, stop vessels as required by the field operation.
Utilizes various hand signals for communicating with flagman on barge deck.
Uses tie-up ropes and wires to secure the tugboat to barges for towing purposes.
Practices the “Rules of the Road” for operating vessels on inland waterways.
Uses radio equipment on the tugboat to communicate with the U.S. Coast Guard, ships, tugboats, etc.
Performs daily safety inspections of the tugboat and recognizes possible problem areas such as hull leaks, packing-gland leaking, tie-up cables and ropes, steering cables, wires, etc.
Performs minor maintenance as may be required and understands basic functions of the boat engine, transmission, generator, water pump, cooling system, etc.
Works closely with the General Foreman, Barge Foreman, Crane Operators, Welders, Helpers, and other skilled crafts persons to complete current projects in a safe and efficient manner.
Participates in Health, Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.

POSITION REQUIREMENTSA minimum of three (3) years Boat Captain experience and master boat license for tugboat is required. The incumbent must:

3) Be knowledgeable in the use of tie-up ropes and wires to secure the tugboat and recognizing possible problem areas.
4) Be adept in the proper use, donning and doffing of negative pressure respirators, positive pressure and/or SCBA respiratory equipment.

Since 1999, has been involved in conducting water quality surveys in support of environmental compliance for offshore industrial operations requiring compliance in accordance with environmental regulations and permits.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Boat Operators will operate an assigned survey vessels/boats during dredging and pile driving projects on various waterways along the East Coast in the United States. Operators will be required to perform duties in adverse/inclement weather aboard vessels/boats at sea. Must be able to work independently and follow technical instructions as required.
Job include, but are not limited to the following Ensure compliance with the maritime, federal, state and local law, to include other regulations in accordance with the USCG basic water-safety guidelines.
Read weather reports and adjust navigation as appropriate.
Analyze maps and record GPS coordinates of sampling locations.
Understand and comply with standard procedures and guidelines for the operation of a safe and environmentally sound vessels/boats.
