I am researching for my dissertation how sailing captains lead in extreme situations such as when there is a strong potential for massive physical, psychological, or material consequences to them, the crew and/or the boat, such as storms, accidents, and any other similar situation. As an offshore sailor myself, I believe your stories will contribute to our understanding of these events.

I am contacting you through your member website as someone who has potentially been through these types of events and has stories to tell. I would very much like to interview you to hear your stories. If you have been through these kinds of events with crew on board, I very much hope that you will respond to this email
I expect that the interview will take about one to two hours and we can either meet in person if you are in the Seattle area or use Zoom to conduct the interview. I will send you a Zoom meeting notice that you can use to enter the meeting with me at the agreed upon time. I will be recording these interviews and then transcribing them into text so that I can analyze them.

Your confidentiality and anonymity will be protected by me. I will remove all references to your name from all written records. The only place your name will appear is in the emails we share arranging for the interview, and on your Consent Form, which will not be connected to the written record of the interview and kept secure on my computer.

SUMMARY:

The Boat Captain is in command aboard the vessel and will assume full responsibility for the safety of the crew and guests. The Boat Captain will coordinate and complete the necessary day-to-day operations/activities with the assistance of the First Mate and crew. No member of the vessel crew including the Boat Captain and First Mate is above any work/tasks needing to be done to meet the overall goal of a safe, fun, efficient & working vessel for the guests. Will work as part of the team to provide guests with the best possible, positive experience on Flathead Lake.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Participate in special training & maintain all required license/credentials/certifications
Maintain guest contact – excellent customer service
Knowledgeable with the Flathead Lake area, history, points of interest and sights
Knowledgeable with Resort specials/events/promotions
Knowledgeable with the procedures on how to prepare to get under way, fueling, starting the engine and raising the anchor
Knowledgeable in the operation of the critical systems, i.e. read electronic navigation, gauges, read paper or electronic charts, read a compass, steering, dewatering, safety procedures, etc.
Perform manual checks to verify sufficient fluid levels prior to operation of vessel
Calculate positions, set courses & determine speed of boat to ensure guest safety
Routinely inspect all systems to ensure efficient & safe operations of the vessel & equipment
Ensure maintenance of boat & related support equipment such as engines, navigational systems, docks, boarding ramps, rescue equipment, fire extinguishers & life preservers
Performs navigational watches while the vessel is underway
Know where and how to use safety equipment
Ability to put out a fire
Perform docking procedures
Ability to anchor the vessel
Knowledgeable in the “rules of the road” – who has the right of way
Knowledgeable in the various navigational aids & their meaning
Can dock the vessel or leave a dock in various wind conditions
Knowledgeable in use of a marine radio to call for help
Maintain all daily logbooks
Monitor the loading & disembarking of guests
Assist in hiring process of Seasonal crew members & First Mate
Responsible for the training and orientation of all crew members, ensuring all crew members understand and perform their required duties adequately
Responsible for the work schedules of the crew
Monitor and submit the crew’s time records to Payroll
Create & maintain Marina Operations department SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for the boat
Ensure all crew members are trained, understand & abide by the employee handbook, their position descriptions & the SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures)
Participate in & execute emergency drills
Ability to render first aid, assisting with a medical evacuation, conduct a person overboard procedure & have the ability to get a person back on board from the water
Complete & properly log written drill reports
Maintain a clean, neat, safe vessel; restock necessary supplies
Resolve questions or problems with guests
Prepare pre-season and post-season inventory of all gear, boat maintenance & related support equipment, i.e. engines, anchors, navigational systems, docks, boarding ramps, rescue equipment, fire extinguishers & life preservers
At the end of the season, report any item needing attention and/or repairs during the off season.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED
At least 19 years of age
Required documented days on a vessel within the past 3 years for 50 ton vessel.
CERTIFICATES/LICENSES & REGULATIONS:
Current USCG license/credential
Current First Aid & CPR certification
Basic Safety Training

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Determines course and speed on basis of specialized knowledge of wind, weather, tides and current.

Steers the vessel and may push or pull barges to destination and to berth while avoiding hazards to shipping and utilizing various navigation devices Supervises the vessel crew in the daily operation of the vessel Oversees the loading and unloading of vessels Tracks and reports crew days and cargo hours and reports it in a timely manner Keeps logs of vessel operations as required by company or USCG Ensures safety of crew and vessel and upholds the safety policies of the Company.
Leads crew in conduction safety meetings, JSA’s, and other reporting conditions Maintains Communications with office about sailing directions Teamwork is a must

QUALIFICATIONS : To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE : Minimum of 5 years of experience as a vessel captain. Alaska experience (local Knowledge in operating area) is required LANGUAGE SKILLS : Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, governmental regulations, and safety regulations.

Ability to write reports and accurately record information into vessel records. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, crew, customers, and the general public.
English speaking is required. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS : Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
REASONING ABILITY : Ability to use common sense and sound judgment to deal with situations and multiple problems that occur simultaneously in a highly controlled and regulated environment.

extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; explosives and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Employment Period: May 1st through September 15th
Duties
Operate a 26’ aluminum North River boat with twin 150hp outboard motors and a 9.9 trolling motor.
Clean and maintain a safe fishing environment on the boat.
Maintain fishing equipment and tackle for guest’s use.
Bait preparation.
Fuel boat as needed.
Guide 4-5 guests on daily fishing excursions from 7:45AM to 4:45PM for salmon, halibut, rockfish, black cod, flounder, Dungeness crab, and shrimp. (We provide training on all fishing techniques)
Assist with daily fish processing.
Assist lodge mechanic in boat maintenance and repairs.
Miscellaneous duties related to lodge operations as needed.

Requirements<

Must have a current USCG license to carry passengers for hire. (OUPV 6-pack minimum)
Good health and ability to lift 80 pounds.
Must enjoy working in an outdoor environment.
Able to conduct routine daily tasks with limited or no supervision.
Must enjoy entertaining people and able to get along with fellow workers in a remote setting.
Must submit results of DOT drug screen urinalysis prior to employment. Results of drug screen must indicate no use of illegal or dangerous drugs including marijuana.

Compensation/Benefits
Monthly Salary DOE + tips. Paychecks are distributed bi-monthly.
Housing – Private room with shared bathroom/shower facilities. Bedding, towels, and laundry facilities available.
Meals – Daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided while on the boat or at the lodge.
Company is required to withhold applicable federal taxes from paychecks.
