Job: Alaska Waters Captain

Job Description:

Required for Position : USCG Master’s License. (Your application will not be considered without this requirement)

The vessels Captain is responsible for directing safe and lawful operation of the vessel to ensure the safety, health and discipline of all crew onboard, and is responsible for the overall management and supervision of fishing and processing operations.

Work Schedule :

Typical work hours are 12 hours per day, 7 days per week, however, the Captain is responsible on a 24 hours per day basis.
Work Environment :

While performing the duties of this job, captains may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, moving machinery, trawl gear and various species of fish.
Captains may also be exposed to wet, humid and freezing conditions, high, precarious places, vibration and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Captains work onboard a vessel in the ocean which by nature produces varying degrees of motion onboard.

Protective Clothing and Equipment :

Storm weather clothing, survival suit, mustang suit, life preserver, skiff, life rafts, SCBA, fire extinguishing equipment, first aid equipment, hardhat, noise suppression devices and safety goggles.

Materials, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids :

Commercial fishing equipment such as trawl gear, net reel hydraulics, navigation, ship handling, radio communications, computer, fax and telex operation, sonar and depth sounder operation.

Job Requirements that are Common to All Positions :

All employees must be able to :
Understand and follow instructions, directions, safety rules and procedures in English.
Board and exit the vessel by gangplank or Jacob’s ladder without assistance.
Board or exit a skiff without assistance in all weather conditions.
Ascend and descend steep stairways and ladders in all temperatures.
Work 12 hours hours per day, 7 days per week for the duration of the contract.
Perform repetitive tasks for extended periods of time.
Work long hours in all kinds of weather.
Work in a cold and wet environment.
Don life jacket, life vest and / or survival suit without assistance.
Live and work with others in close quarters.
Be away from medical care and supervision for 3+ months at a time.
Share crew quarters, bathroom facilities, and common dining areas with other crew members.
Must be able to pass pre-employment and random drug tests per USCG regulations.

Job Requirements that are Specific to Captains :

Captains must be able to :
Perform and / or manage vessel navigation and fishing operations of the vessel.
Manage and supervise bridge watch standing activities.
Supervise all wheelhouse and deck personnel.
Direct and manage all operations of the vessel not involving the direct operation of the factory.
Coordinate with all vessel departments and supervise on a continual basis.
Manage all at-sea medical and emergency operations.
Assist the First Mate in providing direct medical care to injured crew as necessary.
Direct the transfer of crew on and off the vessel.
Maintain ships log and prepare all reports as required by the company, USCG and other regulatory agencies.
Inspect vessel areas on a regular basis.

Physical Requirements :
While performing the duties of this job, employees are required to stand and walk; use fingers, hands and arms to push, pull and reach;

bend and twist; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Employees must be able to give and follow instructions, speak, hear, and understand English.

Education, Experience :

Groundfish Catcher Processor captain experience.

USCG Medical Emergency response training.

Current Hazwoper certificate.

JOB DESCRIPTION PILOTHOUSE PERSONNEL CAPTAIN – RELIEF CAPTAIN – PILOT – MATE

WORK SCHEDULE: The standard work schedule for Pilothouse Personnel is day work or 7 to 14 days on the vessel then either 7 or 14 days off. While on the boat, pilothouse personnel stand watch for 12 hours each day with the watch broken into two 6hour watches. The Captain normally stands the forward watch (6:00 AM to Noon and 6:00 PM to Midnight). The Pilot normally stands the after watch (Noon to 6:00 PM and Midnight to 6:00 AM). The Relief Captain stands the after watch if riding with the Captain or stands the forward watch if riding with the Pilot. When a pilothouse person is off duty, it is their responsibility to get adequate sleep and rest so they are capable of working safely and efficiently when required. Pilothouse personnel may be requested to return to a boat during their scheduled time off if an emergency arises. The Captain shall be responsible for all landings and departures with barge tows and shall oversee deck crew daily schedule, and vessel maintenance.

EXPERIENCE: Local knowledge of the Columbia River system as well as Willamette and Snake River systems and their tributaries with a safe barge handling experience will be highly respected, as well as knowledge of Ports, Berths and Moorings within this work area. WCP Inc. and Marine Industrial Construction operates smaller day boats on projects and steady crew schedules upon larger Towboats as Contracts permit.

PHYSICAL DUTIES OF THE JOB: Pilothouse personnel must be capable of ascending and descending stairs or ladders safely, of lifting or moving equipment that may be used while they are aboard the boat, and of performing their emergency duties as listed in the Station Bill. Pilothouse personnel must know how and when to use the emergency equipment located on the boat and be able to properly wear any safety equipment required by their duties. Pilothouse personnel must have hearing that allows him or her to communicate effectively in the conditions that might be encountered aboard a towboat. They are required to communicate in English with other vessels, Coast Guard stations, Corp of Engineer Lockmasters and their own crew. Communications may be via VHF radio, orally, sound signals, or hand signals. Pilothouse personnel must have vision that allows them to safely navigate the boat in situations that are likely to occur when a boat is in navigation night and day, year round. They must have color vision that enables them to identify navigation lights, signals, and symbols, as well as warning lights or symbols. Their depth perception must be adequate for navigation in close quarters, as in approaching locks or bridges. Pilothouse personnel must be able to read well enough to understand Coast Guard Notices to Mariners, Rules of the Road, Federal Regulations, Company Directives, Corps of Engineer Publications, and River Charts. They must be able to write well enough to accurately record all events in the vessel log and to communicate as required in the course of their job.

Maintaining a safe and clean environment on board the vessel at all times, following directions from the Captain and Senior Deck Hand;

Following standard docking and embarkation procedures;
Taking part in regular safety drills and maritime training;

Our Deck Hands are hard-working, team-oriented, and dedicated to the safety and enjoyment of our passengers. While previous experience working on boats is a big plus, it is not required. However, enthusiasm and eagerness to learn all facets of working on the water are musts, as well as the capacity to withstand all weather and sea conditions.
